Protein is essential for everyone who lifts weights because it is the macronutrient that best helps the process of muscle growth. Protein can be most easily found in meats, nuts, and eggs, although when these run out, a protein supplement is recommended. Protein supplements usually come in powdered form.

Types of Protein

There are many different types of protein including whey, soy, rice, egg, and casein. Whey is generally recommended for post-workout because it digests the fastest. Casein is recommended before bed because it digests the slowest.

Note that the price of whey has increased significantly since early 2007 because of various market reasons. See more here.

Protein in Canada

  • http://www.supplementscanada.com - Optimum Nutrition 5LB for 49.99. If you order two tubs, shipping is free.
  • Popeye's has stores across Canada. I found Optimum Nutrition 5LB for $55 at the Kitsilano branch in Vancouver.
  • truesupplements.com is my new favorite place for protein (I am Canadian). It is better priced than trueprotein (especially when you factor in exchange rates and free shipping to Canada/US), they let you buy any amount of bulk whey at the same price (rather than 25/50lbs or nothing), and they let you (for free) individually flavor every 5 lbs of bulk whey that you order (note: however, the flavored bulk whey costs more than the unflavored natural bulk whey). So to all of you that, like myself, have been drinking unflavored bulk whey for months, this might be a nice alternative. - taylor

  • 45€ for Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard

Optimum Nutrition

The first goon-approved protein powder. Optimum Nutrition probably has the best taste/price ratio. It does have a fair number of carbs so it is not exactly ideal for low-carb diets.

Comment: ON 100% Whey Gold Standard is actually 3g carbs per scoop (with 1g being listed as sugars). This does not seem prohibitive for a low-carb diet.

True Protein

True Protein is run by Dante from Dogg Crapp. The best thing about it is that it's completely customizable. You choose your own mix and they send it out to you. Use code LMR104 for a discount.
